World Environment Day and the role of community energy
On Friday 5 June, the Republic of Azerbaijan hosted World Environment Day 2026.
How do you feel about the current state of the environment? Maybe climate action feels out of your control, but you also feel strongly about the strain the environment is under? Do you find yourself saying “it’s helpless, what can I do, I’m such small fish"?!
At Bath & West Community Energy (BWCE), we understand these feelings. Our work helps us reverse this and to, in fact, become important small fish as we join hundreds of community energy groups across the country to be part of the clean energy generation. Local people created BWCE and made it what it is today. We would love to see more people join us and there are a number of ways you can get involved - with action to help that small fish feeling.
But what does ‘clean energy generation’ mean?
It’s being committed to help create green energy from sources that do not use any carbon products or release pollutants in the air. At BWCE, we are a passionate not-for-profit community energy organisation tackling climate change in the B&NES area.
We instal free solar roof panels on local schools and businesses and via ground mount solar farms that generate energy for local people. Our Home Energy service helps householders become more energy efficient in their homes by looking at measures like draft proofing and heat pumps. Our surplus income is reinvested into the BWCE Fund which helps enable local communities reduce carbon and tackle fuel poverty.
